Week 3:
Work 1: Candy Crush Friends Saga
- Candy is a matching 3 game which has very much interesting mechanics. It is a mobile game.
- Candy more likes a traditional matching 3 game but kinds of mechanics give it different experience. The icons in candy are not just icons. They have different effects when you clear them in “L”, “T” or “+” which is called candy explosion. For example if you matching red candies in L then they will become several fish candies, tracing and destroy the targets.
Also the board of Candy is irregular and there’s kinds of obstacles to prevent you matching icons. The obstacles have so many types such as sealing the candy until you explode it by using candy explosion.
- Although I didn’t play this game so much but it still give me many inspirations on how could a matching 3 game different with traditional. Modify the board, add obstacle are the common way to increase difficulty and how to combine those obstacle with my own mechanics is the important things to consider.
Week 4:
Work 1: Mirror
- Mirror is the first matching 3 game with battle system I played. It has a complete but not complex battle system.
- The battle system of Mirror has kinds of skills and items. You can pick 5 skills and 4 items before the battle start. Each skill will be picked from 3 same type skills (For example you can only pick 1 healing skill for healing slot). You can make those skill become a combo or you can change the combination for specific enemy (So if the boss has huge physical defense you could chose magic spell). Also, if the boss always gives you huge damage after a long time charging, you may chose the healing skill which recover lot of health but long cooldown. Or if the boss preferring poison you, you may prefer skill likes Heal over time.
- Mirror isn’t the game that my idea came from although it is similar as mine. Both of games are similar in icon (weapon, health, energy…) and boss actions (Before boss cast a skill, it gives you some turns to prepare). But I did forgot Mirror when I trying to design a matching 3 game because last time I played Mirror was 2 years ago. While I because this related work, I remembered Mirror and I found I can learn much from battle design from Mirror. It is quite hard but interesting.
