A restless night creates unexpeted problems.
My first conception of Planet Dreaming involved the planet spinning. In the first draft I discovered once coloured that the land masses/sea did not meet up - a continuous loop was NOT formed. It was pointed out to me that the planet cannot readily be seen spinning (eg. from the moon) so I abandoned the spin and focussed on the character of a dreaming planet. I experimented with depicting REM with eyelid movement but this just created confusion. I found a small clip of the animated character, Pop Eye, snoring which informed a more successful snoring mouth and finally altered the trajectory of the dislodged citizens to complete the sequence.
As an illustrator my job has always been to condense and crystalise ideas into one explanatory image. This project helped me grasp the idea that in animation ideas need to be extrapolated over many images.
