Aim: to test time dilation as a possible way of breaking motion expectations inspired by David Claerbout Wildfire (meditation on fire) 2019-2020
created a button input for the system to
control the global time scale. This was a quick blueprint
implementation. Initially when the button is pressed it
would play game at normal speed, but if it was released
it sped it up 20x. The player had to hold their finger on
the button for it to play at a normal rate forcing them
to maintain focus. I then tested this with slowing down
time when the button was pressed, and then slowing it
down so much that it stopped time with the cameras still
functioning, becoming almost like a slideshow.
Reflection: This test allowed me to see how the game
might function if I used David Claerbout, Wildfire
(meditation on fire) techniques of time dilation. It was
highly effective for creating a break, but I found there
wasn’t a way to implement it as skilfully within real-time
animation as Clarebout does in his 3D animation as
he can decide the exact point. As the timing of the
implementation seemed to be important for his work
and the effectiveness of this technique, I imagined I
could use it randomly or only when large splashes fired.
This is something I would like to explore further.
