APD Week 4 – Play and Place
Theme
When thinking about place, and how when a location is given meaning and context, it becomes a place. To me I immediately thought of home, or rather one of my homes. I originally come from Sri Lanka, a place I have countless memories and association with. I thought of how I could transform my home into something that it is not or possibly never be. Being a tropical Island, there is not much in the way of seasons, there’s hot, wet and wetter, so I decided to create images of seasons that could never naturally occur.
Methods
I used to google street view and some images online of landmarks that I have visited countless times, including the street I grew up in. I then took these into photoshop and manipulated them to create the feeling of a seasonal change.
Context
My goal starting out was to look at change, and how the feeling of a place can be completely different – the mood read by the viewer, while the underlying image itself is the same. I found these amazing images taken by an unknown author, depicting places seasons apart, and used this as the basis for my images.
ART SPATE: INCREDIBLE TRANSFORMATION INFLUENCED BY SEASONS
These images were passive and were made by simply capturing the passing of time. To be playful with this, I wanted to actively create scenes that could not be.
Reflection
In part this response came of being stuck inside during the current lockdown, having been away for so long and unable to go outside here. In a way these fantasy images are something I am just as likely to see as the real thing given how the world is right now. I could have also done this with images of Melbourne, although the seasonal variety of Melbourne leaves little to the imagination.
