Week 7: Mind Mapping
This week we needed to determine the direction of our work for the rest of the semester. After much deliberation I decided to develop a complete suspense story as my starting point and use it to implement what I will be learning each week and will continue to refine my ideas.
Since the style I wanted was suspenseful, the starting point for all future elements would be to design around how to enhance the suspenseful atmosphere of the story. This will help to make the story more integral, and will also help to have a better sense of expression if the story is visualized later. With this in mind I created a mind map for this project (see below)
In the story "The Second Space", I will take inspiration from the famous novel "The Door Between" by American speculative fiction writer Ellery Queen and "The Three Coffins" and "THE JUDAS WINDOW" by John Dickson Carr. These three novels are all classics in the suspense and deduction genre. In particular, my favorite author, John Dickson Carr's novels, is very good at enhancing the suspense of the story through the details of the characters as well as the setting. This is exactly the same direction I want to explore, so I think these literary classics will be my help in creating the story.
During this week's creation, I had intended to develop the story entirely through my own thinking, but as the story progressed the logic seemed increasingly chaotic. However, through the process of creating a mind map, I was able to sort out the lost logic lines. I believe that making mind mapping a priority in future projects will be a more effective use of time and a necessary skill for development.
