Week 5 focussed on character, and particularly how a character’s intrinsic state manifests in their visual design. For an exercise, we created a scenario with a character who has a short fuse but is also very uptight and has a "proper way" of doing things, and another easier going character to contrast this. We worked on creating a short narrative around the premise dialogue "Look at what you did... why did you put it there??", and came up with a scenario in which these two characters were washing dishes, and the easy going one puts the dish in the wrong drying rack, which triggers the OCD of the uptight one.
Initially some of the inspiration came from Inside out (Pixar, 2015), where the character of Anger, is in almost the literal sense a manifestation of short fuse. In some of the sketches I did this was the general shape I used for the character but as we worked on creating the personality for him, he evolved into a taller, more angular form, to reflect his uprightness.
In contrast, the other character, the calmer and easy-going persona I chose to draw with rounder shapes, staying away from the sharp angular lines which helped create a sense of caring and is as far removed from the angry character as possible.
