This week I did some world-building and character design for a short story reflecting on my experiences in primary education. This explores my feelings of frustration and confusion as I struggled in an environment that didn’t support my development.

Animation allows me to utilise bold character design to express my experience of otherness and to denote the characteristics that differ between student and teacher. I am able to use colour and shape to great effect to convey the ways in which people interact with the world and one another. The clear distinction between sharp and round edges allows me to communicate the main characters' disconnect to their community and environment.

I am inspired by Chronemics by Animade (https://vimeo.com/118801020) that has distinct light and dark based characters and environments. This striking art design helps wordlessly convey the friction and conflict between the two characters.

It is no secret that I have struggled to get to the story element in many of my weekly responses. This week I decided to derive a story from my personal experiences, particularly with my struggles in primary and secondary school. I felt it might be easier to focus on the storytelling aspect if it was already a story I am familiar with. The document I created more closely reflects how I typically brainstorm. It’s more linear with new ideas building on top of the central themes.
