Intention and summary of Day 7 in Workshop
5/07/2020 AGI Workshop Day 7
INTENTION: Storyboard and evening shoot (light)
A) TO DO
B) Storyboard for Diary. Keep shooting specific testers.
C) 2D animation
> Restoryboard Home.
Possibly work on corrections to animatic but time!
> Rotoscope washing on line

RATIONALE
B) Now focusing on Dairy as my intention for Folio 2. DID NOT DO ANY YESTERDAY.
C) Experience rotoscoping as a quick method for testing ideas.
CONTEXT
B) Make explicit connections to the following for Diary.
(* Elegance/PES/Aug(de)Mented/Bruegel/Henderson/)
For Home (Giants Episode 2 Sun/ Morph/ Home on the Rials (DIR)Paul Driessen via Wells/...)
METHODS
B) Keep using thumbnails/filming/found objects/writing to fill out Diary Storyboard. Dot point as I go.
HOW TO GET INTO THE STORYBOARD
OUTCOMES
A) Sound recordings for Home and Diary.
B) Stop-Motion: Thumbnails/preliminary storyboard for Diary.
C) 2D: Home second iteration in PSD with new structure of file. Washing viewable as footage of some sort.

Driessen – every part of the image has a role, this is applied to my world building in Home.

HOW TO GET INTO THE STORYBOARD
SUMMARY
Have sound recordings but no way of combining them. Home made ones are pretty ordinary but will do for roughs. Freesounds better.
Have Diary somewhere between thumbnails and early storyboard stage. Think the storyboard stage will be all of Folio 2.
Although completed 1/2 second iteration of Home have ruled out Psd for animatics but no replacement yet. No rotoscoping done.
KEY LEARNINGS
HOME - Photoshop not good despite rethinking how I organise the file. Using terminology (maybe not correctly) does helps me organise Eg. assets/ BG. Approx ½ storyboard in animatic form but find another way to produce the animatic. The thumbnails were a quick process – pencil and paper – scan/capture – distribute to frames (much like my old process for work before going all digital). Red overlay for movement on pinned up sheet on the wall made CHECKING back easy. (Applied this process to filming later with Diary).
Research needed on After Effects/Adobe product from CC.
DIARY – completed first storyboard by approaching it as I did with The Runner’s Widow. Divided the story into three parts (A, B and C) and ran one on top of the other so thinking through one part at a time. Did some further test footage and noticed that this had more structure as I referred to the storyboard, but also started to find moments where the thumbnails need altering. The thumbnails stage alone may need quite a lot of time as the interweaving is critical and for now I can’t make the connections beyond broad scene ideas. I have the structure of the story but not the details.
Research: How do other stop motion animators build up their storyline? PES does a single frame drawing – find out more! Contact Isobel Knowles – how does she work up an idea. What confuses me is the shooting itself creates solutions (and problems) so not clear how much I can predetermine via drawing.
