“In response to the week’s theme of Observation, I made a short animation that shows a bird’s silhouette passing by city buildings from the perspective of someone (myself) standing below. I used traditional 2d animation techniques to create this work.
By harnessing colour and movement in my depiction of the buildings I was able to highlight the vibrancy and character of the city. The stark black of the bird creates a juxtaposition to the bright and cheerful city, highlighting the dark side of the metropolis while emphasising the perspective of looking up at the buildings from below.
Similar themes are present in Steve Cutts’ short film In The Fall, in which animation is used to depict a man’s fall from a building as his life flashes before his eyes, presented to him by black crows (Cutts 2011). This animation shares similar ideas to my work both visually and conceptually.”
