For character, place and simulation class, the objective was to Tinker.
I started with a mindmap and explored what it means to tinker: this ranged from ideas of technological tinkering, failure and success in technological advances, and aesthetic concerns like steampunk, cyberpunk and biomechanics.
I was also interested in exploring octopus as the dominant species, using prosthetic vertebrae to dominate the earth. This is something I will hold onto down the rack in my explorations.
Ultimately, I combined something I am familiar with (drawing the human body) and something I am unfamiliar with. I am unfamiliar with SFX, biomechanics and explosion simulations in animation, so I decided to animate a hand that explodes from its lower arm.
In this piece, I got more experience in animating in procreate and something that I learned was how to use my layers and time more effectively, by duplicating my documents and drawing directly onto layers instead of wasting time merging layers.
Something I want to practice more of is making longer animations with higher frame rates. As you can see in this progression, I improved with my use of colour and detail, but the animation itself is barely a second long.
