Statement of Intent

RATIONALE

In this studio 2, I want to create a series of short animations which relates to the concept of fear/phobia. I think fear is psychological mapping but also a product of the collective subconsciousness. So I think the idea has the potential to explore, it can resonate with people.

When I was in studio1, I started learning to use Toonboom to make 2D animations. I hope that I can continue to improve my 2D production technology this semester, so I will also use 2D to present this Minor Project.

CONTEXT

Initially, I was inspired by a list of 'A-Z Strange and a common list of phobias'. It's stated as many as the phobias and it aroused my interest. When doing character design, I will refer to these books such as, "Classic of Mountains and Seas" and “Yokai Storyland: Illustrated Books from the YUMOTO Koichi Collection”.

There also many illustration artists did related works.

  • ‘Deep Dark Fears’(comic book), Fran Krause;

  • Joan Corneila, series of black/surreal humour illustrations;

  • ‘Peur[s] Du Noir’,Caillou et al. 2008

  • ‘Cat Soup’, Tatsuo Sato, 2001

  • Junji Ito( Japanese cartoonist)

METHODS

Firstly, I will start with generates short storyboard and think about which stories could work. During the process of storyboard, I will work with character design and aesthetic performance as well.

After those stories well structured, I will draw 2D animatic by Toonboom. Then, putting those animatics into final animations.

OUTCOMES

In the final outcomes, my minor project will be a series of 2D short animations which is 3-5seconds each. Those animations will be maintained in a consistent style.

Currently, I will keep working on the stories generate and here some initial sketches.

I am still concern about the aesthetic performance which includes characters, colour, etc.
