How can hybrid animation help discover a relationship between 2D objects and real-life spaces by the interaction between them.
For Studio 2 this semester I focused my folio in trying to explore the relationship between 2D objects and real life spaces by the interaction between them, by creating a short linear hybrid animations, in which different characters that I created can interact in the spaces they are placed.
What is working?
At the moment Stop motion mixed with augmented manual reality is pushing my idea forward because it helps the audience to ingest my idea a bit easier than other methods. Secondly while doing this minor project with a straight-ahead mentality makes it more fun and helps me discover different ways to explore my inquiry. The method of using stop motion with real life footage and the 2D characters I created for does different situations; seems to be working fine at this point. Constant iteration of different characters and placement of them in different real-life spaces and situations is giving me a bit of an understanding of what relationship does these two have, while at the same time using different methods to try to convey my ideas like Hombre Mcsteez work, cell animation and scratch animation are keeping my methods open to try to approach and answer to my question.
What isn’t working?
Animating directly in the real-life footage that I recorded wasn’t working because, the timing and interaction that the character has to have in it was a off, and made me understand that each character that I was creating has to blend in some way in the real-life space and not feel dissociated from it, to help me convey my ideas. From this I decided to stick what was working at the moment and with what had better response from my peers and that was using Acetates and stop motion to create my animations, while keeping in mind that my characters has to interact with the real world and try to blend with it in some sort of way.
What now?
I must finish my animatics of the three characters I’ve created to see which one works and which one doesn’t to try and narrow down my concept a bit more and try to answer my question with my work. That will only come through with trial and error, researching a bit more my methods and my meetings with my mentors from the studio should help me get to my goal. In the upcoming weeks, I will finish the short animations of the animatics that’ve worked and put them together with a common thread of a theme, A theme born out of iterations and external reflection. With the goal of trying it to submit to the end of year presentation for MAGI.
