Studio 2: Abstract
Sound is an essential ingredient in creating immersive virtual environments. The use of audio and visual evoke certain emotions in the player. The use of specific sounds in a spatial narrative can create an ambiguous player experience. This interactive piece combines soundscape with a virtual environment that simulates the feeling of 'stuck in the past'. The project aims to find out the association of audio and visual with 'hazy memories' and how emotionally that influences players, and help the community of practice understand that abstract use of sound and environment in a virtual setting can stimulate the emotion of Saudade in the players. My practice sits within linear narratives, however, it is distinguished by its minimal, abstract, and open-ended style of narration.
Environment and Sound Test
I worked on modelling the lighthouse and refining the environment last week. For the lighthouse, I looked at the Eye of Mordor from The Lord of the Rings, because I believe it is an abstract but accurate representation of a numinous entity which suits well in this interactive concept. Getting accurate reflections on the water material and animating it to make it look like 'flowing' was a bit challenging task. I was able to find and map the perfect normal map to the material without creating too complex shader. This way, it will be less computationally intensive. On the other hand, I spent a lot of time designing and animating the character for the final sequence. Also, to give the feeling of 'forgiveness' and overcoming from past memories, I used light as the representation of hope and transformation.
