This has kind of been an interesting week. Satisfied that I had finished up my Folio 1 project, I leapt into something completely different. I'm still not exactly sure what this is, but it's sort of starting to look like I am making another game (or world to explore). Because the first games I made in Folio 1 were so spontaneous, I naturally wanted to make one that was a little more considered - the result of research into an interesting topic, rather than the result of grinding away learning Unity.
This interesting topic has ended up being the Australian music scene, with an emphasis on Channel [V] and the Big Day Out. It's going well. So far I've watched several hours of old [V] footage, watched several BDO documentaries and listened to a whole podcast series on the history of the BDO, watched a documentary on the ABC series Recovery, have started reading a book on the history of Melbourne radio institution 3RRR, and have done some readings about Playable Cities that were given to me by my supervisor Uyen Nguyen.
All of this new knowledge is percolating in my brain. It hasn't quite led to an excellent idea just yet, but I'm just going to continue to have faith that that moment will come. So far it seems like I could even just end up making a game map based on a map of the Big Day Out. This wouldn't be the hugely exciting project that I had envisioned but it could end up being a cute weird Internet project that might spur some interest around Australia.
So far everything feels very "offline" which is refreshing, but I should probably get back on my computer soon before the semester gets away from me. Indeed, I am not really sure what my next steps are, but hey, I am learning a lot about a few topics that interest me, and so I have no doubt this will lead somewhere cool.
