Studio 1 Week 5 Environment Work
This week I was exploring warm, inhabited spaces. I wanted this environment to both feel cosy and lived in, so that it would fit naturally with the narrative.
This work is an experiment in environment design and concept design more broadly. Walter Peregoy is a fantastic artist who did environment art for Hanna-Barbera and Disney. His environments are exceptionally vivid, and expertly play with shape and composition. In particular, the concept art he did for 101 Dalmations (1961) was an inspiration this week. The concept art for interiors within this film perfectly captures this idea of intimacy through mess, and warmth coming from this sense of life.
Similarly, I hope to create lively interiors which will act as a background for an animated sequence. I want these environments to be engaging, and have details which communicate warmth as well as suit the characters which inhabit the space.
Using Clip Studio Paint, I began this process by sketching a rough idea of the craft room I wanted to create, and focused on getting a feel for the colours and objects within the room. I then started to look at the details, like the walls and the floorboards. I enjoyed adding small details like the tapestry and sketches on the walls. I gathered lots of reference photos during this process, though I found it hard to progress because I had not considered the camera angle entirely. I also experimented with whether my previous spinning wheel object fit with the room, because I wanted to see if the two styles would meld together. I realised I needed to decide what angles I wanted to view this interior from, and I think the 3D model (or models) would need to be better adapted to the backgrounds’ style.
