MAGI Folio Plan

1. Rationale / Intention

  • I want to design an exploratory skate boarding game
  • It will focus on longboarding, sweeping hills and surfy coastline, and the goal will be to capture the feel of skating itself
  • I want to make this game because I want to translate the feeling of skating in this way, as I used to, into an experience I can share with others. Capturing the feel of the act of skating, as well as the overall vibe as characterised by the WA-inspired environment, are core to this effort

2. Context: Field

  • I would be working within the field of game design
  • More specifically, I would be working within the field of open-world adventure games, like The Legend Of Zelda and Feather
  • Complimenting this, I would be entering into the realm of action sports video games, specifically skating games
  • Outstanding practitioners in this field are Nintendo, Rockstar North, Vicarious Visions, Neversoft, Samurai Punk

3. Method

  • This project will be broken up into several smaller tasks
  • Environmental design, implementing board physics, sound design, polishing environment, character design (produced and prioritised in that order)
  • Sound design covering board sounds, ambience. Potentially licensed music, if there’s enough time

4. Production: Tools

  • Environments and assets will be modelled in Autodesk Maya
  • A quick, rough environmental design will be done in Week 1 so that I have a canvas to test out board physics and player controls
  • The environment will be a rough block out, and mostly natural hills and coastline, which can be quickly designed with sculpting tools
  • I have already designed a base mesh for a character, which I can alter, rig and animate throughout the semester
  • I have already modelled a longboard, which I may or may not re-texture to better fit the overall aesthetic, once that aesthetic has been solidified
  • Unity has a wheel physics system, as well as numerous plug-ins. I will research these tools and find the most suitable option for simulating skating
  • I will source sound effects and soundscapes to colour the world and implement these directly into Unity, likely with some alterations in Adobe Audition
  • If I have enough time I will create a library of environmental assets (trees, rocks, birds, etc.) to populate my world
  • All of this work will be screen recorded and edited into concise project documentation in Adobe Premiere
