Continuing my exploration of Paul Laffoley, I was instructed to situate his works within a field of practice.
This was no easy task, as Laffoley read widely. His influences from seemingly disparate fields like topology, string theory, theosophy and mysticism enabled him to draw surprising parallels about the nature of reality. As I have noted in the diagram itself, the list of influences is by no means complete.
In terms of placing his works within an art tradition, I drew heavily from Linda Dalrymple Henderson's essay 'Paul Laffoley and Dimensionality: Visionary Painting as a System of Knowledge' (2016) which invited comparisons to the Suprematist Kazimir Malevich, to Dalí, Duchamp and to Robert Smithson, a contemporary of Laffoley's.
To create the 'galaxy' graphic that forms the background, I used kaleidoscoping and collage techniques I had explored earlier in the MAGI program. The original image was from the cover of a science fiction magazine, in homage to the notable impact of science fiction on Laffoley.
