Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

1. Describe/define the aim of your research in one sentence
To understand why animation is able to achieve the suspense of disbelief without the need of representing reality to a tee.

2. What is your practice component of your research?
I’m creating an animation where I use visual metaphors to help the character emote his state of mind. This means I’ll be breaking reality and visually showing attributes that would be unnatural if it weren’t done through animation.

3. How will you proceed with this?
Firstly I will need to broaden my research and deeply explore more ideas of the Principles of Animation rather than focusing on one--only grazing the surface.
In regards to proceeding with my practice, I will have to come up with approaches that explore different ways to view what would otherwise be simple actions/movements.
I’m currently animating a character that goes through two stages of emotion: drowsiness and panic. S

4. What methods will you use to document your progress in your practice?/reflect on your practice (ie what forms might it take)
I’m creating 1-2 weekly journals which I post weekly on the MAGI website. I reflect on what I have completed through the different viewpoints of my courses. For example I approach my project based on how I could improve it technically, then I approach it through the eyes of research media and advanced play design where I look into incorporating the theories and practices into my work and give it a true purpose.

5. Are there any additional methods you will use to support/evidence your research
A bulk of my additional research will be through the books that were recommended to be through the feedback of AT2. I need to extract my findings through this research that will help with my project endeavor. The research should look into all possibilities rather than just one that fits my narrative which would give it confirmation bias.

6. Give one example of an artefact that has come from your research in the past week.
I’ve been reading Torre’s (2017) Animation - Process, Cognition and Actuality and I found an interesting statement that will help with my project. He talks about the three philosophical phases of animation that will help create a novel entity. These are Construction Phase, Animative-State and Presentation Phase. He then goes on to explain how it can be used alongside ‘post structuralism’ where in this case it pertains to turning the ‘differences’ and ‘repetition’ from a disjunctive state into a conjunctive one.
