I used hand illustration and Krita to document and communicate the theme of observation. I started by posting myself outside the Sephora at Melbourne Central, and stood there for about 15-20 minutes drawing people that I saw.
In my ballpoint illustration that I did plein air, I convey a sense of bustling movement by drawing many different characters very small and bunched together. For the security guard, who I was most interested in, I drew his various movements as different frames.
In Krita, I refined my experiences down to the bare essentials of what I saw: the security guard walking his patrol in a loop, the colours of the space and the striped pillar in the storefront.
my intention in this artwork in focusing on the sole character of the guard was inspired by Louis Daguerre's photo containing the earliest known image of a person on camera. In the picture, the exposure has resulted in the only stationary subject being captured. In this sense, the security guard looping his patrol at Sephora reminded me of the stationary figure.
