WIP video 1-2 weeks Semester 1

First, as the practitioner’s work I want to introduce short animated film of David Lynch, which he created while studying in university in 1969. Creepy and unsettling, it has no plot to speak of but still manages to disturb and provoke deep emotions. It features the memories of a young girl of having to learn alphabet. Lynch mixed so well everything in animation, stop motion, and real motion. We can see that strange and abstract objects give birth to the letters of alphabet, man sings and woman vomits blood over some shits. David Lynch says that the film was an attempt at visualising the ‘fear of learning’.The alphabet also marked as the debut of Lynch’s unique talent for sound design. This animated film inspired me with the surrealistic approach and limited colour range with colour accents.

Second work is a musical animated video clip Wordlife - Vision. Here creepy characters and parts of their bodies flying, dancing and transform to each other. Combination of positive catchy song, unique stylisation, sense of humour and pleasant colours remove any feelings of fright or disgust and make this video piece of entertainment.

Turning to dark comedy, it is my favourite genre in animation. Mix of dramatic deep topics with dark humour and absurdism provokes a lot of interest in me and I would like to explore this area by myself.

I’m interested in the field of 2D animation and my methods are:

Script writing

Mood board

Character design

Scene brainstorming

Plot flowchart

Storyboard

Animatic exploration

Sketches -  This week I made my first steps in animation. I created series of surrealistic characters, who react differently to the same falling apple. First step was creating sketches with motionless characters, I wanted them to be approximately in one style. My characters are not coloured, I used only rough line while working on them, it made it easier to animate and I also wanted it to be graphic. I made only one colour accent on the falling apple to draw attention to it.

I can say that I enjoyed creating those animations so much!

I would like to add more scenes according this idea, maybe with more sophisticated actions according this apple such as curling around the apple, explosion, installation of the apple directly to the stomach and so on. I want characters and their actions to look more surrealistic.

I used pro create while creating my animations. I want to try to make other animations in toon boom. Ive been trying to learn how to use this program since last week.

Also I created the short animation, where I experimented with abstract objects and their communication with each other and background. My purpose was trying to make objects transfer to each other smoothly, to leave the frame and to get inside of the frame without feeling of extra.

Overall I think I achieved a lot in those two weeks and I would like to continue my studying software, stop panicking and enjoy what I’m doing.

Thanks for attention.
