As part of my research into visual style, I looked at various musical kids apps on the App Store. It seems that flat 2D vector illustrations is a common thread amongst all the work, a style I was keen to stay away from in order to establish a point of difference. This led me down the path of a more hand-drawn, rustic, collage visual style, which I thought suited my concept of a junkyard band more. I drew a lot of inspiration from the works of Shaun Tan, Nick Bantock and the Dada movement. I really liked their use of collage backgrounds, textured paper, colour palette, typography and sense of tactility in their work.
The background design for Jump Jump Band is a collage of various 17th and 18th century sheet music from the public domain, and the title is a custom font I designed that incorporated musical notation elements into the typography. I also tried to keep to the same hand-drawn look of the characters with my UI and menu designs.
