This week for IOL, I used a sound from the BBC sounds archive and I immediately was drawn to a sound file of baby crocodiles squeaking. They sound like goose honks mixed with squeaky toys and I took 2 different directions in responding to it
I did not use my studio project for this response because my music video that I am making for my Major project will not have diegetic sound or sound effects asides from the song
For my first exercise, I tried to make an anime style explosion. I referenced the film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, in the climactic sequence at the end when the God Soldier shoots fire at a herd of Ohmu. I started confidently by using simple shapes like circles and lines to create the explosion, and the impact with the sound file is impressive. However, I felt directionless in terms of developing a sense of grounding impact from the explosion and the abstract nature of the animation gave me little inspiration. I could improve on this with more time and study of multiple explosive sequences. I can also in the future reference real life explosions, not just animated
I then tried a different apporach of having a cat squish into a small blob, and used the sound as though it was squeaking as it compressed. My biggest achievement here is that I used 24fps which is the highest framerate I have animated with. It is smooth and bouncy, just as I intended.
