Sound and Animation (Sound #9)
EXPERIMENT I: work with simple lines/scribbles only
EXPERIMENT II: work with simple shapes only
EXPERIMENT III: work with a combination of lines and shapes.
Aim: As an in-class exercise, to use the audio of Sound #9 as a basis for motion in animation.
Method: Using ToonBoom Harmony to create minimal and abstract hand-drawn animation using sound as a starting point.
Outcome: A short montage of hand-drawn animations featuring basic lines and shapes that move with a specific sound clip.
Reflection: The adjectives I thought of for sound #9 is jittery, quirky, and escaping. As someone who isn’t familiar with Toon Boom and don’t have any extensive hand-drawn frame by frame, I’m very pleased with what I’ve created. Music and sound has always been an integral part of my practice, as well as appreciation of any medium. I believe that being able to involve our sense of sound in any creative endeavour or project, always elevates one’s experience with the final output. During this exercise, I definitely improved in creating hand-drawn animation and movement. So much so that I am considering a hand drawn approach in my studio practice’s visual elements in projection mapping, as well as my IOL folio 1 submission. Hand-drawn animation reacting to sound feels more natural when watched, but I should also consider the time it takes to create these animations in future motion attempts.
