Aim

This week we were meant to experiment in timing, spacing and rhythm. I identified a rhythm in the animated walk-cycle of my studio 3 project.

My initial idea was to try out different speeds and frame spaces to test the differences in tempo and how that would affect the gait and mood of the character.

Method

I used clip studio paint to create 3 animations with different tempos of the walk-cycle by spacing out the keyframes and adding more inbetweens.

Result

The differences in spacing and time resulted in 3 different types of walkcycles which conveyed very different moods. The slow gait with spaced out frames gave off a more melancholy feeling while the faster one have a more upbeat, excited tone to it.

Discussion

These experiments made me realize what an important part rhythm is to animation and how it affects the whole tone of the animation. Timing and spacing is definitely something I consider a lot more in my future practice. It would definitely helpful to consider rhythm in other animation loops like the walkcycle.
