Aim

For week 2, we focused on loops, cycles and repetition and played with the idea of of layering and experimenting with such loops in my work.

My aim was to figure out how to layer animations without them overwhelming each other and having different levels of importance so as to not make the scene look too busy.

Method

I used clip studio paint to create different animation loops which I then layered on top of each other to create a complete scene.

I decided to have a background animation of waves, a foreground animation of flowers blooming, and a ‘still’ animation of a girl.

Result

Because I made the background animations have no lines and the foreground animations have very distinct sketchy lines it helped them stand out. Also, because the still animation didn’t distract the viewer’s eye too much, it let the flower animation take precedence.

Because this was an experiment in looping, I had two of the same flower animations staggered and at different locations just to see how it would look.

Discussion

These experiments made me realize how useful layering is as a technique in animation. Having too many elements moving in a single standalone animation is complicated and difficult to balance. Layering and looping basically break the big animation down into smaller manageable increments.

In the future, I’d like to incorporate layering more in my practice to make more dynamic and multifaceted animations. I’d like to try layering smaller, almost subtle loops and have it bring life to the whole animation.
