After an introduction to IOL, we did an pratice on designing a project based on our understanding of other people.
The process is a little different from other groups since we have three person; the question session was a bit rushed but we still managed to get some valuable discussion.
Ben was my group partner. From the conversation, he seemed to to be a pretty rational person, and as he said, didn't have the habit to put himself into the work. And as an animator, he shows a strong sensitivity towards the way animations are made, thus I felt I should design a technique oriented project for Ben to finish. He said his favourite animations are from Disney, thus I thought it is valuable to examine the moves of the fictional character by moving your own body; interpret their intention then behave as he would commonly do, having his movement recorded and examine the difference in movement from the basics, and generalize a method that can be applied to process similar movements under different circumstances.
I'm a really serious person, it's kind of hard to let go the thought when the pratice reached another step when we are requested to find some radical ideas. So I basicly did some random things like getting high watching Disney stuff to have it branded in the head and stuff, which I don't really like.
For the prototype, I decide to translate a Disney princess, Snow White, into 3D space, buy building a skeleton statue of her. It was interesting because the weight distribution of the skeleton made with wire is different from a real person, or the illustrated on in the animation: the center of gravity is much higher since more material is used for more detailed part of the body, and it was fun adjusting it's pose to make it assemble the one on the screen.
Ben seemed to like my suggestion. He kind of felt he overused live action reference for his previous studio project and he might find it useful to treat this as some form of mental pratice.
