Aim

To create a metamorphosis effect in 2D animation. I chose the theme of magic elements that I used in my studio and created a frame-by-frame animation with the two opposing elements of light and shadow.

Result

At first, I animated the golden energy ball representing light and the deep purple energy ball representing shadow. Then I did another animation about a white dragon. When the two energies were combined into one, they were transformed into bright white light and became the huge dragon.

Discussion

For fantasy or magic themes, metamorphosis is essential, but simply changing outlines or shapes could be quite boring. So adding some interesting effects, like vibrations, particles or bright lights could be a good choice. I did not directly draw the transformation from the energy ball to the dragon in the animation software but made it in the effects synthesis software. Compared with drawing, this method is more convenient and fast, but it may lack some artistic charm.
