Problem: How can I achieve a stylised illusion of depth in a 2D platform?

Assumption: I have to be technically accurate in illustrating perspective.

Reflection: Having little background in perspective illustration and environment design, my problem lies in the assumption that perspective needs to be reflected or presented in a technically accurate way in order for this to communicate to viewers. To challenge myself, I revisited this notion of technical accuracy and subverted this through drawing simple shapes with no clear direction in terms of a point of origin (initially) and repeating them over and over again. This idea of layering became an experiment I wanted to try to see if I could create an illusion of depth through this simple iterative movement of simple lines. I also added another level of layering in the form of a crowd using simple shapes with solid colours. I initially had the concept of a packed train but it ended up resembling a crowd at an art exhibition. As a final experiment, I added very simple movement to create a notion of a crowd buzz without sound. The outcome turned out better than expected and does play with the idea of perspective depending on how close you are to the image. It also shows that simple lines and shapes can create the illusion of perspective supported by a smart choice of colour utilised as shadows.
