For this week's exercise on sound, I selected option B used sounds of my own choosing in two of my previous animated loops created in the earlier weeks..

I wanted explore the idea of visual music as an idea of two things, either filling space or filling a void or further emphasising the empty space. This is related to my overarching working enquiry of understanding how perspective can be used to enhance a scene's strength and depth to communicate an emotion. I used two animated loops I created in earlier weeks as I've been wanting to test/practice with combining sounds effects and ambience to create the intended emotion and to understand how sound can contribute to this if not more. I used license-free sounds obtained from freesound.org. For the train animated loop, the underlying tone is of sadness and the idea of heading into a void represented by the train's movement moving through the subway tunnels. The premise of this scene is when the little girl forgets her umbrella on the train and the umbrella is left behind. I used a train carriage sound effect and a soft piano to reflect sadness. The alleyway animated loop has a more underlying ominous tone and I wanted to use ambient sound of a quiet street at night and the sound of a flickering lamp. The silence combined with a repeated sound almost felt unnerving - the emotion I was hoping to instil in the scene.

With more refinements in the animated loops, such as the movement of the train carriages as it runs along the subway and, perhaps, a car passing in the background of the alleyway, will add more detail to the scenes overall. With sound, I would like to explore recording my own ambient sounds and sound effects. Overall, sounds is just one component of how it can be used to enhance a scene and, when used, effectively, can be very powerful.
