Chen has always been fascinated about western style animation. He says that one of the main facts that calls his attention is how expressive these productions are in terms of body language and movement in general. His field of practice has only required to expose the internal feelings and struggles of the characters he has worked with, or developed, through animation, being this reflected in very subtle movements, postproduction effects or aesthetic decision. In addition to this, he has always been attracted to adventure, exploration and trying completely new experiences which encourage to think of the box and get out of our comfort zone. After getting to know each other a little bit, together, we came up to a very interesting idea.
It is very easy to express feelings through a character with anthropomorphic features such as eyes, mouth or limbs. But, how would an inanimate object, without a face or limbs, express its emotions?
This was the premise that I proposed to Chen. Personally, I think that this particular experiment will be a very interesting challenge for him who has a background with Motion Graphics only. It will give him the opportunity to explore Gesture Drawing and Body Language on a deeper level. A very similar exercise that many animators have tried before, in fact, it is known that many animation studios around the world ask this exercise to their applicants. The Sand Bag.
In this case to make it more appealing to Chen's interests we decided to make it a Sword as the object is related to the medieval times, the knights, the fairy tales with all their values and lessons. The sword is an offensive and defensive object, a tool, a weapon, in other words it has lot of potential to develop ideas and concepts through it.
Apparently, Chen really liked it!
