Draft animations for the intro and outro of my One Hundred Ghost Stories book installation.
I wanted the Intro to set the context for the experience, telling the user a bit background into what the Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai (A Gathering of One Hundred Supernatural Tales) is; and to include an initial prompt for the user to extinguish the flame.
And for the Outro, I wanted to animate a whole bunch of ghosts flying out of the book as the book "shakes and erupts" (to signal the summoning of the spirit after the last candle is extinguished), followed by a thank you message.
As per suggestions from Kate, I focused on just animating abstract, blurry shadows for these myriad of ghosts, using sound/music to enhance their existence. Emmett suggested reusing the fire animation I used earlier for my Oiwa Lantern animation, but turning it upside-down so they resemble the shape of ghosts. I took in their feedback, and this was the result.
I also wanted the focus to be on my main ghost story animations, so I opted to keep the intro and outro animations very simple, keeping to black and white monotones and just adding a simple snow/embers effect in the background.
Upon reflection, I thought the dissipating effect on the text can be done better. Will refine in the next round.
