Guest speakers Daniel Calvo & Angela Hernandez discussed their relationship with art, technology and design in their approach to creating interactive works.
Calvo & Hernandez emphasised the desire to keep their works very tangible and connected to the real world, turning devices into physical toys or incorporating elements such as user-made illustrations or physical objects as controllers. Their belief is that creating experiences that are not purely digital leave users with more memorable experiences through the participation of creating the final artwork.
They also highlighted the importance of keeping the ‘art’ aspect of their works alive, noting that art is the thing that drives all their creations. This means thinking about what the core ideas are, how to make them possible, and what the users gain through engaging in these creative experiences. Having an idea is great, but it’s your capacity to bring it to life that makes you an artist.
