Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Played around with Tinkercad today at a workshop run by the local library. With no experience in 3D modelling, Tinkercad was the perfect software for beginners. We made a simple gear shift using the standard 3D shapes that came with Tinkercad.

Pros:

  • Extremely easy to use, and had some great tutorials that guide you through the tools
  • All web-based and free!
  • Visual interface - no coding involved
  • Workplane and ruler tools are handy
  • Can export as .obj to import into other 3D programs like Unity
  • Can export as .stl for 3D printing
  • Access to a library of models made by other users

Cons:

  • Limited customisation of shapes (you can't adjust vertices, only the overall shape) - it is a very basic tool for beginners
  • Must be connected to the Internet (cloud-based)
