Theme: Found Objects
Context: Objects and foods (I was very hungry)
My object for today was a pen-fan hybrid. My stomach was growling in class craving for lunch. Unable to think further, my mind went back to PES’ example of perceiving objects as food ingredients. Then I reminisced about my childhood collecting random objects then crafting them into toys.
When I was little, I had never asked my parents for toys. I enjoyed making my own toys. I had a tea party made of water pipes, plastic pinwheels and parts of old, broken toys I picked up. Depending on the object’s shape, color and size, I assigned what it would represent. For example, orange pinwheels were carrots, green pinwheel were green veggies, etc. If my Mother had not thrown away all my “creations”, perhaps I could credit myself in the community of practice for the theme.
I found two more notable artists who also created artworks on food vs object theme: Martin Roller and Vanessa McKeown. Although they mixed foods and objects together to fabricate their “sculptures”, their practice was quite similar. By taking advantage of how the brain connecting shapes and colors to known imageries in order to make an effort in explaining and processing the visual inputs, a variety of objects as a result had their new assigned roles and purposes.
Method:
By using the same practice, I relied on my imagination trying to assign new roles and meaning to my resource of materials. Without using real food this time, I was applying the same practice of PES.
Response:
I went borrowing objects from my classmates and pick up some craft supplies available in class. I made a BBQ dish and dessert, staged my products then photographed them to illustrate a “Menu du jour”.
Grass could represent fire. Anything could represent food. Depending on the individual’s visualization of what food should look like.
I also added some steam effects to the kebab because ANIMATION, DUH!
Program used: Illustrator, Photoshop, Selfie phone apps and After Effect
