In response to the theme of Place, I did a scene design by recreating a half of a photo that I took during the period of college travel for study. I presented another side which could be scary and mystic of an old factory by using contrast and juxtaposition. The factory which is reused as a gallery is now located in Shanghai. This factory left me a gloomy, horrible and mystery impression when the first time I went. It isn't hard to make me fantasize the story which could be a dark fantasy behind this huge architecture. In this work, I examined how to use black and white colours to create a horrible and dark atmosphere. Dark means unknown in building a place, it sometimes catches the fear inside our mind. Generally, lights in this kind of dark places play a opposite role, giving us hope, however, when the lights light up something unknown or weird, it may bring us deeper fear. Similar work Limbo (2011) made by Playdead Studio inspired me. The nearly total dark art style with ingenious using of lights and shadows in this game is what I love the most.
