In response to this week's topic of Found Object, I created an illustration using the long bitter melon and dragon fruit in the kitchen and combined those two to make a design that is based on the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, Vietnam. I used Paint Tool Sai to illustrate the image and used specifically the square brush to emphasize the rigidness of the objects chosen. The shape of the dragon fruit is interesting cause it has the flare and the spread of the dragon's scale that it resembles. The bitter melon is rigid and heavy, which would act as the bridge's support!
I was inspired to use the Dragon Bridge, being that my family is of Vietnamese ancestry and these two objects were organically produced in the family's garden.
I was inspired by Tatsuya Tanaka, a Japanese photographer whose main subjects are miniature figurines and life-sized objects, his work utilizes Found Object as it re-contextualizes everyday objects to serve different purposes through the use of scale, making the objects bigger through the perspective of the miniature people. His work utilizes imaginative play and it's what inspired me to make this piece.
