In response to this week's theme "Force", I create some portraits in Procreate under following rules:
By creating these illustrations, thumbnails of animation, I examine the idea of setting constraints to better guide my work. For rule 1, I revised it into 2 minutes instead because I felt like that I can barely think and draw in 20 seconds especially when painting in color blocks. Extending to 2 minutes gives me more time to have inspiration and still doing a quick visual drawing . For rule 2, I encourage myself to combined existed objects. For example, the watermelon on flat candy, it makes no sense why and how it happens, however the viewer will make up the details on their own when the see the picture. There are similar applications in poetry, where some nouns are presented side by side, giving the viewer space for association. As for rule3, I try not to draw with lines to have a quick and creative production. Lastly, rule 4 is saying I capture abstract feelings and materialize them. When these original paintings are developed into animations, the process of transforming an object into another object can be seen as a description of the mood, like a bizarre dream that emerges from the subconscious. These key frames depict the past love-hate relationship between the protagonist pink dog and the supporting role fox. The memories are buried in the subconscious, and the discontinuous fragments that emerge reveal the connection between them.
Similar work has been produced in the series "Don't hug me I'm scared", the fourth episode of six. From 2:15 the main characters are having a digital trip before it is disturbed into chaos. During the time they experience themselves in different materials which gives me an inspiration of swapping into various styles such as maybe they can be present in geometry or dissociation. When they enter the digital world, they obey the rules of the virtual world, whether it's their actions in the play or the clips that depict it.
