CPS Week One Response
My object created around the theme of Observation. I produced some typography illustrations for the lyrics to the song Out On The Shield by Said The Whale (Said The Whale, 2009). The images were first concepted out as sketches in a visual diary and then were further refined digitally using Photoshop. I was aiming to invoke the syncopation of the music and inflection of the vocals with visual elements. Bolding parts of words as they lined up with the beat, and distorting the shape of letters to show how the singer held the end of a word. The story within the song has a melancholy element to it, and I wanted to express how the music seemed to try and lift up towards something at the end of each part. The last bit of lyric had a second vocal track that was just holding a note, it felt ethereal and also emphasised the lost dreams of the story, so I wanted it to wrap around and envelop the lyrics.
