Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

This week I contemplated the effects of the environment on the anatomy of a fantasy creature such as a Mimic. I did so first using pen and paper, then Photoshop.

I think one of the often overlooked facets of fantasy is how much the setting can influence the way we design fictional creatures and characters. The mimic has always been one of my favourite creature designs, so I decided to reimagine it as though it were a creature from a modern office setting.

An excellent example of evolution and the effect of environment on fictional characters can be found in 'Man After Man' by Dougal Dixon (Dixon 1990) in which the author explores the ways humanity might evolve in a post-society Earth. Much of the book is highly fantastical in nature but it takes great care to consider the consequences of the subjects changing environments.
