Context
Having studied and loved physics, I have a fondness for forces. I’m also careful not to limit my thinking to the physical forces alone. This week our class generated a series of design constraints and then chose 3 each. I picked “turtleneck”, “must be hand drawn” and “only 3 colours”. I thought it would be funny to create a 2D turtleneck fighting game in the vain of classic arcade fighting games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters. These games are often absurd and I have never tried to make a fighting game before.
Method
Firstly I had three friends from class pick 3 colours independently. Interestingly the colours they picked were a fantastic retro pastel pink/ blue/ green colour scheme. I hand drew a sprite sheet in my sketchbook, three types of turtlenecks and two cassette tapes they could fire at each other like fireballs. Whilst I was drawing I thought about a simple control scheme which I could implement in a day. I put each player’s turtleneck on a podium and gave them a jump and fire ability. The aim of the game would be to knock the other player off the podium by firing your cassettes at them while jumping theirs. I finished the game and put it up on itch.io.
