Context:
Acknowledging and embracing the forces that shape what we do is a way to conciously tap into our creativity. The forces for this work are the given constraints:
It must use curves to make a drawn (not generated) animal.
Further this work is formed by my internal drivers, my own forces, that is, the drive to understand my patterns of thinking through making things, the intent to use patterns of repetition with variation and my recent experience walking through the 60s artscape at the museum of melbourne's exhibition; and it is formed by the tools I use, for example, after effects makes it easy to use simple round shapes and its easy to repeat these made shapes.
Method:
Create an animal using curves, without using code, in adobe after effects.
Response:
This was an exploration of the role of constraints in creativity. I found it easy to create something that was a satisfying description of my internal state - I haven't been sleeping well so by mid-afternoon my brain keeps drifitng into a dream-like state of half-consciousness until night falls and once again it's on hyper-alert. The rules pushed me far outside my comfort zone, I've been avoiding drawing things lately as I try to create my planned VR environment with code, and giving me a style (based on curves) took away that decision making time that can stretch indefinitely into nothingness.
