In response to the theme of ‘Character, Environment, and Events’ I produced a demo scene in Unity (playable here) set on a spaceship, where the player can interact with a collection of multi-colored glowing cubes, as well as having the ability to disable or enable gravity.
By giving the player the ability to turn gravity on and off, I was able to give them a direct way to change the physics of the environment, which then in turn has an impact on the other objects in the scene and their relationship to their surroundings, as well as on the player and their ability to move and navigate the environment, so the player and the environment both have an affect on each other in a cyclical way.
A work that explores similar themes in a similar environment is the game Heavenly Bodies by 2pt Interactive (trailer viewable here), which is a 2D physics based puzzle game, similarly set in space, where the player plays as a cosmonaut attempting to carry out their duties aboard a space station in a zero-g environment, where nothing stays still. The player's progress at completing their task list is hampered by this inhospitable environment.
