Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Context:

  • Tracey Moffatt's portraits in Something More that tell a compelling and rich story
  • Cindy Sherman's exploration of character and identity through photographic portraits
  • Tokien's Gandalf's shift from Grey to Gandalf the White
  • Paul Albert Steck's painting of the biblical character Judith
  • The BBC's costuming of the time-travelling Dr Who throughout her many incarnations

Method:

  • Show the shifts in identity through showing particular moments of time

Response:

I've created a moving tableau of aspects of my identity as it's shifted over the past few years. This reflection is looking back to particular moments of time, and my image of the past is always from the perspective of the present me.

The progression of time is shown as the seasons from summer to autumn to winter to spring. Within each vignette I've slowed time at key moments, particularly as death (dressed in black) gives attitude alongside a distinct lack of remorse at what she's done.

Each 'me' has a different costume, a different outward manifestation of how I attribute meaning to those shown moments.

I'm learning a new language, a grammar and vocabulary of visual storytelling. In this piece I've aimed to tell more of the story through the background of books, pictures, flowers and teacups.
