In Week 8 of CPS, we discussed how character and their actions and formed because of events and environment. I realized it’s important to have context behind a character’s design, so I decided to create an interactive piece of work that would let people pick their own elements and make their own characters with their own stories.
On the topic of what constitutes a character I think it’s their feelings that drive them and what background they were brought up in. I felt that feelings were best shown through facial expressions, as for the background, it would’ve taken much more time to build up multiple small characteristics that come together to create a person, so I decided to have objects dress up the person in a slightly surreal but cute way.
Instead of making all the objects first, I decided to make a few and then try and build the interactive base in unity first with an expandable scroll view to select the objects. Working with Unity engine again, I failed to reproduce my vision exactly as I wanted to as the scroll bars loaded in an unusual way when exported with WebGL. The game is still functional though I’ll research more on how to avoid that in the future.
I was inspired by Pastel Girl by SeyeonSoft which is a casual dress up game of chibi characters with many cute options that update regularly. Although I couldn’t manage to build my small game up to the extent of Pastel Girl, I think I successfully incorporated the base mechanics of changing outfits into my game.
