Theme
This week's theme is an extension to the idea of 'Object Oriented Ontology'. This time, in 'Character, Place and Events' we study how the events and time would influence the character.
Context
I found photos of historical wine barrels in Musée d'Unterlinden in Colmar on the internet, and that got me thinking about how these barrels have been existed solely in that room, without much of the human influence. The process of fermentation itself is very interesting and I thought about how that process would force the material over a long period. The temperature and humidity in these type of places are the main reasons to store the wine barrels. I wonder what if the water is leaked into the room and spoils the intact nature of these barrels, how that would merge with wood and create moss over time. Also, the structure of the barrel would degrade and displace as the water penetrates the wood, the bands that are wrapped around the barrel would loosen up as well.
Method
I wanted to create the model of a barrel and my focus was on the details that the model would depict the whole story of decay. I spent about three hours to model the barrel because I heavily focused on realism. So most of my modelling time was spent on tweaking the geometry and adding randomness to the polygons.
On the other hand, the material should be photorealistic. After spending about two more hours, I believed I was near to what I wanted.
Response
The final render of the barrel is the outcome of about five hours of work. I did not want to spend too much time on this piece and I guess the result is decent enough to explain my concept. But, as always, the hunger continues and my mind hates to stop coming up with new ideas. So, I will probably be working to create a whole scene in the future and add some more details.
