In response to week fives theme of “Object Oriented Ontology”, I presented a series of pencil sketches to illustrate that creatures have started use human materials in different ways or without human interference. Animals have adopted their own uses for objects. In doing so I have illustrated how hermit crabs have come to claim human objects as their own homes, and how slugs in a fantasy world will have adapted to plastic bags and predators by becoming physically like them.
This idea was inspired by a photograph that was taken by Shawn Miller in 2015 of a hermit crab wearing a bottlecap as a shell. While his photo was to illustrate environmental concerns, it inspired me to take a fantasy approach to his photo in how the animal kingdom could or has been adapting to the world of human rubbish.
