Day and Night

M. C. Escher

1938

In the lecture I saw this painting and suddenly loved it. I like the aesthetic created and the unbalanced symmetry. That’s why I want to borrow from it. I think I can create an environment concept design so then I went to search for the tutorial of the concept art.

Method

Using Photoshop to paint, I chose those brushes I was not often use to draw

Response

I like the concept that one static place can actually tell a story, so I want to try drawing a place which can hold a story. By using photoshop, I draftly drew an environment concept with a world to contain two different town, the upper one represents for the light, the happiness and the power, the lower one represents for the bottom of society. I want to show some kind of effect of light and shadow.

This is the first time that I try to draw a environment concept design, I think it was fun to try with different brushes to achive different affects, which the story is told by the every stroke.

Reflection

I borrowed the idea from the “ Day and Night” by Escher, and also the feeling of unbalaced symmetry, what I have drawn is a world have two sides, the upper side represents power, nobility, bright- ness and prosperity, the underside represents weakness, inferior, darkness and barren, and this is my idea for my animated narra- tive script which depicted a world of dystopia, and also a conceptreflect on light and darkness. It was fun to try many differentbrushes in photoshop in order to paint for a environment, and I also played with colours to create a sense of fantasy.
