In response to the theme of tinkering, I produced a short animated gif using Toon Boom. By creating a short gif I showed the different iterations of the character by trying to add whatever characteristics first came to mind. By adding whatever I thought of first based on the generated name for the character I was able to experiment with tools on a program I had limited knowledge of. Aiming to complete the characteristic and continue adding new additions helped me to see the different ways I could use the modes and tools such as different layers and techniques of animating either frame by frame or by manipulating the vectors. I didn’t pause to think about whether the characteristics I had added made sense to the character which allowed me to create a unique character that I would not typically create. Similar work has been produced by Earwolf, whose work Offbook, explores this theme through improvisation. Offbook is an improvised sketch musical that begins based on either an audience member’s or guest’s life experience. They take that premise and begin to expand and explore the prompt, sometimes even steering well away from the initial idea. Through the improvisation, they tinker and refine the storyline and characters that they have created.
