In response to the theme of Tinkering, I produced a lighting overlay for a short animation using 1-bit dithering techniques that followed a Bayer matrix pattern.
By using dithering in gradated patterns, I showed that effective lighting can be produced in a binary display, the use of two colours still allowing for the dynamic play of light and shadow.
Similar work has been produced by Wolfgame, whose game Silverquest Gaiden explores this style by using a similar 1-bit lighting technique of dithered masks to imitate the decreasing line of sight. As for the theme Tinkering, the game produced by Lucas Pope, The Return to Obra Dinn, grew from his similar tinkering inside the confines of the 1-bit format and shows the sheer volume of technical achievements that can be made when working within such restrictions.
