Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

In response to the theme of Tinkering, I created some pixel art character designs using basic shapes (square, triangle, circle), which I made using Aseprite, a pixel art drawing and animation software. By designing these characters using random placements of shapes rather than a plan, I have demonstrated that tinkering has a big part to play in character design in all forms of media. The process of tinkering actually serves to augment the process of character design in video games, as seen with Kratos(God of War Franchise), Protagonist (Persona 3) and Bayonetta (Bayonetta). Similar work has been done by Hideki Kamiya, who was the director for the game that eventually became Devil May Cry (2001). His work explores the theme of tinkering quite well, as Devil May Cry was the by-product of tinkering. Kamiya was told by Capcom to develop the fourth installment in the Resident Evil series, and Kamiya wanted to make a "cool, stylized action game" which clashed strongly with the survival horror genre of the Resident Evil series. Capcom then told him to develop the game as a separate title, and thus, Devil May Cry was created.
